I came across this Trumpeter Swan photo taken in Montana in my archives a few days ago and wondered why I had never processed the file or shared it before. My best guess is that I was really busy right after I took the image in June of 2016.
Trumpeter Swan landing in the Centennial Valley – Nikon D810, f7.1, 1/2500, ISO 400, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
I love the scenery of the vernal wetlands, the landing Trumpeter Swan, and the vibrant yet naturally rich colors shown in the photo. Most of the time, I prefer to have my subject larger in the frame. However, there are moments when I believe that the habitat is just as significant as my subject. This was precisely the case with this swan photo.
The splashing water in front of the swan conveys a sense of movement that I rather enjoy.
Spring is a season of joy for me and for many other people. I think that this image shows that joy.
I miss spending time in the Centennial Valley of Montana in spring, summer and fall. It is the wildness I miss the most.
Life is good.

Graceful. Beautiful. The background is wonderful. Thanks Mia.
That is such incredibly beautiful country. Now I want to go again. Thanks for giving me a great idea for a road trip.
Lovely photo
Stunning – and since the swans I see are black, exotic in my eyes.
