Muskrat standing in a marsh – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/800, ISO 500, -0.3 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
While looking for birds at Farmington Bay WMA last week I spotted a Muskrat standing up in the marsh through an open area of vegetation. I quickly stopped my Jeep to photograph the furry, yellow-toothed rodent.
Although I wish there hadn’t been shadows on the Muskrat I was simply excited to photograph one of these creatures that wasn’t swimming in the water. I have tons of photos of Muskrats swimming, so many in fact that I have only posted a few. I don’t have many of them standing up in their back legs showing the long nails on their front feet.
Those are some long nails!
The setting wasn’t the best and neither is this image but I was out in the field enjoying nature and sometimes it doesn’t get any more perfect than that. In that moment, I had everything I needed.
Life is good.

Beautiful shot! I love how you caught the light and shadows in the marsh. And,of course, the detail is spectacular. Thanks Mia.
I think it’s a terrific pic! The marsh and partial shadows give the shot a ‘you-are there’ feeling. And, as always, the detail is incredible. Thanks Mia.
Good eye and reflexes, Mia!
Fun capture.
I really like this photo Mia, difficult conditions but you captured it in a great and unusual pose with good detail, even showing the specks of algae on it’s coat!…Well Done!!
Those are definitely very impressive nails.
