Least Chipmunk eating breakfast – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/1600, ISO 500, -1.0 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
Last week I photographed this Least Chipmunk eating breakfast in bright morning light in a willow thicket high in the Wasatch Mountains. I never did see what the chipmunk was eating but I liked that the tiny fur ball was perched on a branch out in the open.
Lately I have been seeing more Least Chipmunks out in the open as they feed on serviceberries, thistle seeds and scurrying across the dirt roads I travel on out in the field.
Soon after this chipmunk finished eating whatever it had held in its tiny paws it moved to another bunch of branches to groom its fur. I had high hopes for the photos I took of the chipmunk grooming but I ended up liking this single image the best.
As often as I see and photograph Least Chipmunks earlier this year I was reminded that not everyone is as fortunate with them as I am. Because of that I stop and take images of them whenever I can. They are hard for me to resist.
Life is good.

Totally irresistible. I so understand why you stop and take photos of these charmers.
They are adorable. My friends from Nevada enjoyed seeing them at Silver Lake, they thought they were babies and surprised when I said no they are full size, maybe born this year but as big as they get. I hope some of the photos they took turned out well.
Lovely photos and commentary. Thanks!
All the lines and angles of the chipmunk and the branches just flow together! That chipmunk is right “at home”.
Beautiful photo!
Great shot!
