Bass Weathervane – Nikon D500, f7.1, tripod mounted, 1/3200, ISO 640, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
Sometimes when I am in the field photographing birds other things catch my eyes that I want to take images of. This Bass weathervane is one of those things. I was photographing displaying male Great-tailed Grackles and the weathervane caught my attention.
Weather vanes have been used for about 2,000 years which is a long time before they became symbols of Americana. This Bass weathervane isn’t all that old but it looks like it is because of the greenish patina on the copper. The drips of bird whitewash probably help with that too.
Nature is often featured in weathervanes. From fish, deer, whales, beavers, dragonflies, and birds weathervanes are eye catching and ornamental. I’ve never lived in a home with a weathervane that I know of but I’ve seen them often in the years I have walked this planet.
Life is good.

Neat find!
I like it! One thing that surprises me, whenever I’m actually next to a weather vane instead of looking up at one , is how BIG they are!
Here in the Canadian. Maritimes most of our weather vanes are ships. Of course😊
