Singing male Yellow Warbler in spring – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/1000, ISO 500, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
This time of year I am anxiously awaiting seeing and hearing my first of season male Yellow Warbler singing from an elevated perch in the mountains. Quite often I see Yellow Warblers first thing in spring in lower elevations moving around in shrubs and trees but somehow their song sounds purer in a mountain canyon riparian zone. Maybe that is because their songs echo in the high country canyons and they don’t in wide open lower valleys.
I have already seen Yellow-rumped Warblers this spring but haven’t yet seen a Yellow Warbler. It won’t be long now before I hear their songs.
I photographed the male Yellow Warbler in the photo above last spring high in the Wasatch Mountains as he sang on top of a willow. Listening to him sing was pure joy. Being able to capture his beauty in a photo? Priceless.
When I find my first of season Yellow Warbler I hope that it will be close enough to take photos. Some years they are a little shyer early in their breeding season. At any rate it won’t be long before the desires of the males to sing and attract mates takes over and the male Yellow Warbler will sing on high perches.
I haven’t seen a Yellow Warbler since last September. I can barely wait until I see them again. It will happen soon. Very soon.
Life is good.

How interesting, on the sound recording, unwanted sound was removed. “mp3 heavily filtered to remove industrial machinery”. Here’s hoping that unwanted sound was temporary, and there’s still plenty of habitat!
I love when the light hits their yellow feathers and shines like the sun.
