Flying Canada Goose and the snow covered Wasatch Mountains – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/2500, ISO 800, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
Last evening when I walked outside to move my Jeep into the driveway I glanced towards the east to view the peaks of the Wasatch Mountains. Through the heavy clouds a beam of light illuminated a section of the mountains where there are stands of aspens. That ray of light made the golden leaves of the aspens glow and as I stood there I was reminded that soon there will be snow on those peaks again. That might even happen in the next few days.
I have thoroughly loved and enjoyed seeing the Wasatch Range practically every day since I moved to Utah. I don’t take the mountains for granted. When I lived in Florida I missed seeing mountains so much that I used to imagine at times that I could see mountains in the towering storm clouds when I walked along the Gulf Coast looking for and photographing birds. Pretending is never as wonderful as the real thing.
Just some of my thoughts on a cloudy, autumn morning.
Life is good.

Beautiful action shot. Wonderful composition. Thanks Mia.
Lovely Goose! I bet you miss the beach too.
I’m picturing the scene you described and have an ear-to-ear grin. I consider myself extremely fortunate to live in an area Southern California where I can feel a coastal breeze and still see the mountains (if I walk a couple blocks to where the road curves a bit). I’m also less than 10 minutes from putting my toes in the sand and about an hour from a mountain hike.
An amazing image. I long to see oceans again, but am very grateful for the hills which my city nestles in to (despite their creation of an inversion factor).
I have the opposite imaginings. Since I’ve been in the desert for awhile, I think of the blue waters of the coasts in South Florida. We’re in San Diego and I am feeling the ocean breeze again. Great pictures of the Geese. I watched them flying south with my Daddy when I was little. Beautiful!
Anita, I also think of the coast, blue waters and ocean breezes. I tried once to get both mountains and oceans by moving to Oregon but the coolness there along with mostly cloudy days weren’t for me.
Outstanding photograph to accompany deep thoughts.
I know exactly how you feel. Every day I miss the Rockies and Coastal range and “my” Golden Ears peak, visible every time I stepped outside the door of my (former) home. If only wishes were horses, eh?
