Male Mourning Dove in the Wasatch Mountains – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/1600, ISO 500, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
Just a simple photo of a male Mourning Dove perched on an old wooden fence rail high in the Wasatch Mountains this morning. I took this photo earlier this month while traveling through a canyon in the mountains that are east of where I live in Salt Lake City. There were two Mourning Doves perched on the fence railing, I liked the images I took of this male dove the best because of the light angle.
I hear and see Mourning Doves calling often at home but I prefer photographing them where I find them in wilder areas.
I know that this Mourning Dove is a male because he has a bluish gray cap with a rosy tint on his face, breast, and neck.
Shortly after I took this photo the male Mourning Dove took flight. The other dove soon flew after him. I would have liked to have taken more images of the male dove, especially if they had shown his tail, but a bird has got to do what a bird has got to do.
Life is good.

Sweet shot reveals understated beauty of this bird.
I also thought male and female doves were identical. Now I’m going to have to start checking each one out! Lovely, peaceful photo.
Simple – and gorgeous. Thank you.
I learned something on the bright, sunny, hot, muggy morning in Southern Ontario. I didn’t know there was a difference between male & female Mourning Doves. I will have to go back through my photos. Thank you!
