Adult Barn Swallow resting – Nikon D500, f9, 1/1000, ISO 640, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
This morning I wanted to share two Barn Swallow photos that I took two mornings ago on the north side of the auto tour route at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. It was cool, bright, and the light was nice on the swallow where it perched close to edge of the road. I took quite a few photos of this swallow that morning.
I’m seeing swallows everywhere at the refuge now and I hope that they will have a successful breeding season.

It isn’t all that often that I have a Barn Swallow so close that I have to back my lens up inside of a “mobile blind” just so I can focus on it. I could have removed my 1.4x teleconverter and that would have helped but my desire to have frame filling images of this swallow prevented me from taking the teleconverter off.
I adore seeing and photographing Barn Swallows and the other swallow species that spend their breeding season at the refuge. There is a peaceful feeling that washes over me as I watch them on the wing over the marshes and wetlands. I think after the year we have had everyone could use a bit of that feeling.
Life is good.

The WOW factor is in! Incredible detail and colors… and the background pops the shots perfectly. Thanks Mia.
I really like the iridescence of the bird and warm glow of the image.
What complete charmers. Thank you.
Splendidly detailed photos, Mia. I did not realize that my teleconverter was doing the same thing. The macro switch on my prime 300mm lens has a setting down to 1.5 meters, but I never measured it. The near point may be a bit more distant.
Heh. Your photos show me what mine SHOULD have looked like. Wonderful!
Sweet photos. One of my fav birds. They nested in a converted chicken barn I lived it long ago. When I played recordings of George Winson they would sing along!
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Bob
