Pair of Canada Geese on the wing in winter – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/1000, ISO 500, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
I love to photograph birds on the wing. It doesn’t matter if my subject is as small as a hummingbird, as large as an eagle, as slow as a gliding pelican, or as fast as a stooping falcon as long as it is a bird. On the wing every bird is majestic. At least that is what I believe.
During the winter I have plenty of opportunities to photograph geese and ducks on the wing close to home at my local pond and quite often that means I have the snow covered Wasatch Mountains in the background. I love those snowy mountains because they make for great backgrounds so it is a win-win situation for me.
Winter Canada Geese on the wing – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/1250, ISO 500, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
Almost one year ago I had a pair of Canada Geese on the wing in front of the snow covered Wasatch Mountains in my viewfinder for a few seconds. I was glad to get them both in focus for a few frames as they circled around to land on the pond. These two geese on the wing brought me joy. It’s as simple as that for me to be happy.
Life is good.

Mia, you capture such beautiful photos. It is not easy to feel a connection with you.
I would not have known those were mountains until the second photo. Lovely exposure, like when I can see their eyes and you even captured the eye glint.
Stunning shots! Both pics should be hanging in the Smithsonian. Thanks Mia.
They are so graceful! Beautiful! Thank you Mia!
Beautiful, I think I can hear them honking…….
They make me (us) happy too.
Win/win/win.
Thank you.
I agree definitely a Wall Hanger!
Be still, my heart.
Excellent photo of the Canada Geese in flight! I love the soft snowy Wasatch mountain background. These could definitely be wall hangers.
Fascinated with birds, all birds. Love your pictures.
