I woke this morning and opened my living room window to the smell of rain in the air and even in the darkness I could see that the street was wet and I am okay with that, we need the moisture. The rain might even help with the wildfires we have burning here in northern Utah.
When I looked at the radar and weather map this morning I could see that snow is falling in the high Uintas and I chuckled because the day after tomorrow is the first of July. The weather can be very changeable in the mountains here in the Intermountain West. Then when I zoomed in on the weather map I could see that some snow is also falling in the Wasatch Mountains just east of where I live.
I pulled up the forecast for Park City, Utah and I saw that the current temp was 35°F when I started writing this post plus I saw this forecast for that area today:
Rain and snow showers this morning. A shower or two in the afternoon – otherwise, mostly cloudy. High 54F. Winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 80%.
Some of the the places I head to when I am looking for birds in the Wasatch Mountains will be a touch on the chilly side this morning.
This cooler weather and rain won’t last long though because by Thursday we will be in the 90’s again in the Salt Lake Valley. Honestly I wish this cooler weather would have arrived near the 4th of July to help with the fires that could and will probably be started by people shooting off fireworks.

This morning though I have been thinking about the birds in the mountains. Hopefully the nesting birds and the chicks that have just barely fledged will do okay up in the high country where the temps are cooler than they are here at home. I do know that birds can be tougher than we sometimes give them credit for. Even the delicate looking hummingbirds.
Life is good. Stay safe.

You know…I’m surprised various counties in CA still allow folks to buy fireworks. This State has suffered some horrific wildfires over the past several years and one would think allowing private use of fireworks would be prohibited. However, California is not known as a bastion for common sense and the risk of serious fires, due to the careless use of fireworks, remains remains a secondary concern.
Love your narrative and the weather graphic. Thanks Mia
Hooray for cooler weather and rain.
I do hope the fires (which scare me) can be dowsed.
And thank you for the beauty of the hummer.
I would love to be in the mountains in rain or snow at this time of year! Hope the little ones and all the fruit make it through these colder temps. We’re in the mid 70s through the 4th and then back up to the mid 80s — no rain at all in the forecast.
Our city has put out more fireworks warnings this year and has pledged to be out there to enforce them, but I’m still hearing fireworks go off. They’re scaring the dogs on our street (and probably elsewhere) and my already terrified foster kittens. You probably know where I’d like to send a firecracker or two.
Oh Marty, I do know what you meant in that last sentence and I laughed out loud!
The fruit should be fine, I sure hope the littles will be okay up in the mountains.
It is a beautiful morning, not the full flat gray of yesterday, lovely low hanging clouds creeping up the mountains and snow on the high peaks.
I admired the low-hanging clouds and the new snow on the highest peaks on my way to and from the grocery store this morning. The heat will be back soon enough!
Lucky you.
I wish you some cooler weather Bobby.
That 4-letter word…..snow! Holy smokes! By mid-afternoon here I will be wishing I was in Northern Utah in the mountains!
LOL Liz, I had to haul out my hiking boots this morning because it was too cold for hiking sandals!
Thanks for the Utah weather report! Glad you’re getting rain too and hope that does dampen wildfires. We’ve had weeks of drought and heat here in Vermont, finally broken by a major rain event yesterday, at least locally. Scarlet tanagers singing away.
Tim, I really hope the rain helps over the next week, people are pretty dense around here when it comes to fireworks and then we get more of them later in the month for Pioneer Day, that is a Mormon thing.
I miss Scarlet Tanagers!
