MacGillivray’s Warbler perched in a blooming Serviceberry – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/1600, ISO 500, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
I don’t have many photos of MacGillivray’s Warblers in my portfolio and I hope that while they are here for their breeding season this year I can change that. I think they are beautiful warblers but they seem to be shy for the most part and I don’t often find them out in the open. Most of the time I see them only partially out in the open as is shown in the photo above.
This female MacGillivray’s Warbler popped into view briefly two years ago high in the Wasatch Mountains and even though she never came out into the open I enjoyed how she was surrounded by the white blooms of a Utah Serviceberry. My glimpses of this species look like this more often than not. I don’t even mind the busy setting, in fact I like it a lot.
To photograph these warblers and other woodland birds I’ve found that I need to find a location that attracts multiple species with abundant food and shelter and then use a sit and wait approach. It takes patience but they are worth the wait.
Life is good. Stay safe.

What a shot! Great composition and the balanced lighting you achieved is wonderful. Thanks Mia.
NNNNNICE!,, Never even knew those pretty little things existed…like the total effect, composition….
I really like the composition with the bird surrounded by the blooms and twigs. Such a neat shot!
Your patience was bountifully rewarded. Thank you.
It is a pretty photo. I will have yo watch for them.
Have yet to see this species as they don’t visit Florida too often. I really like the “busy” image! This is how we most often see the smaller birds, hiding and shy.
Thank you, Mia.
Cute little bugger !! I learn a new bird every time you post !! Thank You…..
What a pretty little thing. Great surroundings for the warbler to hide and you to photograph.
