Western Meadowlark in a puddle – Nikon D300, f6.3, 1/1600, ISO 500, +1.0 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC at 400mm, natural light
While I was looking for an older image file I came across this Western Meadowlark photo and wondered why I had never processed it. I am not sure why because I actually like it a lot. I probably got too busy and it slipped my mind.
I photographed this Western Meadowlark in April of 2014 on Antelope Island State Park and there had obviously been a recent rain because water doesn’t puddle on the roads long out on the island.
What I like about this photo was the reflection of the Western Meadowlark, the still water, the one raised foot and the curvy edges of the puddle. I feel drawn into the frame.
Life is good.

That photo looks really cheerful. I love reflections in water. It gives them a beautiful symmetry. The yellow gives the meadowlark a glow that brightens the picture. Well done!
Love, love, love this meadowlark photo. I just read my local bird blog…..meadowlarks returned to Sherwood Island SP, Westport, CT today
God, I love this pic! The Meadowlark in the puddle with its shimmering reflection…the stuff of dreams. Thanks Mia.
Beautiful, I am happy you rediscovered the photo. The bird looks sad to me, kind of a wet puppy look.
I am so, so glad you found and processed it. I love it. Thank you.
“Now. Why didn’t I fly across? My feet are getting wet! Not good.” Wonderful picture with lots of attitude! Thanks.
Seeing these little yellow guys is always such a delight! He looks quite determined to get to the other side of that puddle. 🙂
Beautiful
I love meadowlarks but whenever I try to take a picture of them they seem to have boundary issues.
I can never get close enough to get a decent shot without cropping it.
Thank you for sharing on this cold rainy day.
I agree with Tim, it warms the heart
Oh yay! Now that’s an image to warm the heart. Thank you!
