Red-shouldered Hawk adult in dappled light – Nikon D200, handheld, f6.3, 1/320, ISO 400, Nikkor 80-400mm at 400mm, natural light, not baited
I came across this adult Red-shouldered Hawk while walking around at John Chesnut Sr. Park in Florida way back in January of 2009.
I liked the dappled light on the hawk along the vibrant greens in the background. This Red-shouldered Hawk was quiet when I walked up on it perched high in a pine. This isn’t a great photo but the reason I like it is because this is the kind of habitat I usually found this species in while I lived in Florida.
During that time of my life I walked miles and miles to locate my subjects on foot and I am realizing more and more that I miss doing that and may need to make some changes. I enjoyed the peace, the solitude, and the pleasure going wherever my own feet took me.
Life is good.

A serene scene. Just lovely.
We’re back in drought again, so I’m especially loving the greenery. The dappled light really picks up the hawk’s markings.
What a beautiful capture of a beautiful subject.
Many thanks.
And yes, there is something almost meditative about a walk through nature.
A plus Mia.
I think it’s a fantastic photo. Very stunning raptor. They certainly are long-lived.
