Northern Shoveler in a morning fog – Nikon D500, f6.3, 1/4000, ISO 640, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
Three days ago there was a little bit of fog at Farmington Bay WMA while the sun was coming up over the Wasatch Mountains which set up the conditions I needed to take this Northern Shoveler photo.
The Northern Shoveler is in silhouette because I was looking in the direction of the rising sun instead of having the sun over my shoulder but when I saw the mist, the ducks floating by, and the sunlight reflecting off the water I knew I had to take a few images just to see how they turned out. The scene had a dreamy look to it through my viewfinder and in the final results that I am happy with.
The darker areas of the photo are from the mountains in the background still being in the shadows and the reflection of those mountains on the water.
I also took a few images of a resting Ruddy Duck that I may share later.
Life is good.

Dramatic lighting. I can almost feel the quiet. Beautiful! Thanks Mia.
Lovely, I like to take photos in the mist and fog.
You are right about the dreamy quality, the golden makes it perfect. I like the northern shoveler drake and hen pic for reference. He has beautiful coloring, there is another of a hen in “birds” that I love. I get detoured in the “birds” and then lose my place for the comments, lol, so better get this in before I get hopelessly mired in the multitude of photos, a testament to your excellent collection of photographs. Wish I could be with you. This is the next best thing to being there. Thanks, Mia!
Lovely…no mistaking that silhouette!
