Immature male Red-winged Blackbird singing from the top of a tree – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/1250, ISO 500, +1.0 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
Autumn is the time of the year when Red-winged Blackbirds tend to form large flocks as they forage in fields and that gives me an opportunity to see adults and the young of the year together.
I photographed this young male Red-winged Blackbird singing at the top of a Russian olive tree at Farmington Bay WMA nine days ago.
Below this bird there were more Red-winged Blackbirds, Brown Cowbirds and Brewer’s Blackbirds and a few sparrows that were tucked into the inner branches.
Most of the birds were singing or calling and I realize this morning that I should have done a video to record how loud and lively it was at the time I photographed this immature male who was adding his voice to the birdy clamor.
It would have been nice to share a video that captured all of the noise that these birds were making. I’ll keep that in mind for the next time I come across such a vocal flock of blackbirds!
Life is good.

Oh, I can just imagine the birdy symphony!
Thank you for sharing this musician.
If I see one like this, I will know what it is!
How lovely to be serenaded by the birds.
And thank you for the immature Red-winged blackbird. Yet another beauty I will not see for myself.
Great shot, beautiful view of immature male plumage.
Thanks for sharing.
