American Goldfinch male in breeding plumage on a Musk Thistle – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/3200, ISO 500, -0.3 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
I haven’t seen any American Goldfinches feeding on the seeds of Musk Thistle so far this year but the thistles seem behind in development which might have been caused by the cold, wet spring we had but I can say that I have missed seeing these bright yellow beauties feeding where I can easily photograph them.
Last year I was able to take hundreds of photos of this male American Goldfinch in breeding plumage while he fed on the seeds of a Musk Thistle. It was cool that morning and the light was great while I sat quietly observing this finch through my lens as I took photos of him on a July morning.
A simple post of a simple image this morning.
Life is good.

I get them all the time at my bird feeder by my kitchen window, males and females… They are pretty nice looking, heard them singing all the time…
SPECTACULAR.
I remember this series because I love American Goldfinches and the complimentary colours.
Stunning as always. I did not see any on the thistle yesterday in Heber but I saw a lot of hummers on the thistle.
He’s quite the looker. Hope you get to see them (and blooming thistles) soon.
