Male Black-chinned Hummingbird sipping nectar while perched – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/1000, ISO 640, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
For several weeks I have been searching for hummingbirds up in the Wasatch Mountains to photograph but until this week I hadn’t found any Black-chinned Hummingbirds. My first view of this male Black-chinned was not in flight though instead he was perched on a branch sipping nectar from a Black Twinberry Honeysuckle.
There is a male Broad-tailed Hummingbird who has staked his claim on this clump of honeysuckles so perhaps this Black-chinned was perching rather than hovering at times to stay out of the view of the male Broad-tailed.
Male Black-chinned Hummingbird feeding on the nectar of blooming Black Twinberry Honeysuckle – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/1600, -0.3 EV, ISO 640, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
The little Black-chinned Hummingbird did actually take flight to feed on the nectar of the honeysuckle and for a few moments was able to hover peacefully before the male Broad-tailed Hummingbird chased him off.
Life is good. Birds keep it interesting.

We have no hummers, and I am blown away by the variety you see (and your exceptional photos).

Really interesting to see image of a hummer perched and stretching to reach nectar. Great shot!
They are sure cute, little birds. Thanks for the posting and love to read the information you have posted about each type of wild life that is photographed.
