White-tailed Antelope Squirrel resting on a boulder – Nikon D810, f7.1, 1/2000, ISO 500, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
While I am out looking for birds to photograph I like to take other photos of the wildlife I see on my journeys and some of my favorites are the different species of squirrels I see here in Utah, Idaho and Montana. My portfolio though is lacking my “dream” images of White-tailed Antelope Squirrels because I don’t see them all that often and when I do they generally aren’t close to me.
I photographed this White-tailed Antelope Squirrel in 2016 near Torrey in Wayne County, Utah, the squirrel was resting on a boulder a couple hundred yards away from where I was camping. I wish I could have gotten closer to the squirrel but that just wasn’t possible since I was photographing from inside of a vehicle and other boulders next to the road prevented any movement in the squirrel’s direction. I liked to pose of the squirrel, the textures of the boulder, the background colors and the great eye contact I had with the squirrel.
I’ve photographed these antelope squirrels closer to home in the West Desert and it might improve my chances of photographing this species and getting my “dream” photos of them if I spent time in that general area more often than I do. I’ll be making a note to self to do just that.
Life is good.

Love it! The contrasting textures of the boulder and the squirrel are terrific and the color balance of your composition is perfecto. Thanks Mia.
I love these little guys! I watch them in Red Rocks Canyon every year when we are there. While house shopping in St. George one of the houses with natural habitat had a colony of them living in the yard. I wanted to buy the house due to the Antelope squirrels.
He/she sure is cute!!!
Thanks again for sharing an educational post about this cute little critter. This is a new squirrel species to me and I will be on the lookout next time I’m out west.
Always enjoy your wildlife photos Mia. First time I’ve heard of the white-tailed antelope squirrel too. Nice composition I agree but wanted to see more and I found this short video that gives a good look, including the white tail:

Never heard of them before. Pretty cute little guy.
Like the shot, and I agree the composition of the boulder with the squirrel on top is great. Thanks for sharing.
He looks to me as if he has an air of intelligence about him. Neat! 🙂
