I haven’t photographed or shared photos of American Bison for a while so I thought I’d share a photo of one taken back in January of 2015. Antelope Island State Park is home to more than 500 wild American Bison and they are usually easily found on the island. There are times when the bison head to the west side of the island which is only reachable by foot, bike or by horseback and at other times herds of the bison can be seen by the hundreds on the east side of the island.
American Bison grazing with snow on the ground – Nikon D810, f13, 1/800, ISO 320, -1.0 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR, natural light
I can remember the day I photographed this American Bison bull grazing with snow on the ground clearly in part because I was seeing the island with a friend who hadn’t been there before which is akin to seeing the area with fresh eyes. The bison bull was pushing the snow around with its muzzle to reach the grasses beneath it.
The island is beautiful during every season of the year but I must say that winter is great for photographing these large, dark land mammals against the pure white snow. Obtaining correctly balanced exposures can be tricky because of the high contrast between the dark animal and the snow but the results can be stunning.
Life is good.

Love those big guys.
What a majestic marvel.
I always enjoy seeing the bison, and it would be nice to see them with someone else through their eyes. Speaking of eyes, I like the capture of the glint in his. Happy shooting in the new year, Mia!
Nice warm color on the shoulder. He matches his environment.
Excellent shot …especially with the exposure issues…well done …and thank you
I love the light on his upper back and his clear eye.
Gosh! He’s gorgeous! You really nailed the shot too — Kudos! 🙂
Cool
