Sleepy juvenile Burrowing Owl, Box Elder County, UtahSleepy juvenile Burrowing Owl – Nikon D810, f7.1, 1/1000, ISO 400, +0.3 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light

I’m a little like this sleepy juvenile Burrowing Owl this morning, I overslept, my coffee still hasn’t kicked in, I’m yawning frequently and I am still sleepy.

This photo was taken on July 3rd of 2016 which is now nearly two years ago. It was a great year for Short-eared and Burrowing Owl photography here in northern Utah because they were so plentiful and I was able to spot them in many locations. This year has been okay for spotting Short-eared Owls but I am sure not finding Burrowing Owls like I had been in previous years. I don’t like to be an alarmist but I do admit I am concerned about the Burrowing Owl numbers here in northern Utah.

Normally I don’t keep many photos of birds or animals when their eyes are closed because eye contact is engaging and connects me with my subjects but in some cases I actually like photos of my subjects with their eyes closed and this juvenile Burrowing Owl photo is one of those images. Eyes open or closed this owl is a cutie.

Life is good.
