Snowy Egret landing at Farmington BaySnowy Egret landing at Farmington Bay – Nikon D810, f8, 1/1600, ISO 250, -0.3 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light

About a year ago there was a gathering of Snowy Egrets at Farmington Bay where they fattened up on the fish and frogs they found there to get ready for migration. There was a lot of fighting and territorial behavior to be seen as they chased each other around when any of the other egrets would catch prey or when a bird would wander to close to another hunting egret. They were quite amusing to watch and photograph and I just never knew when a squabble would start.

Right after I photographed this Snowy Egret landing it started to chase after another egret that had a small fish and they both flew off with their backs to me.

Farmington Bay WMA opens the gates near Goose Egg Island in just a few days and I wonder if the egrets will be back in this same location this year before they head south for the winter. We’ll see!

Life is good.
