Mule Deer buck in snow – Nikon D300, f6.3, 1/1600, ISO 500, +1.7 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC at 400mm, natural light
Last year I complained that we didn’t have much snow and we didn’t but this year is turning out to be more snowy than last winter was. Since moving to Utah most of the winters I have seen have been pretty snowy and the winter of 2013/2014 was a bit above normal at times.
I photographed this frosty Mule Deer buck in snow on Antelope Island State Park in December of 2013 while he was following a few does through a field of snow-covered mullein. He stopped for a few seconds and looked right at me and I had to chuckle because I thought the frosty area in front of his antlers looked like it was covered in diamonds in the bright light. Kind of his crowning glory.
Life is good.

Gorgeous photo.
Wonderful image with the eye contact. The snow has been nice but very chilly!
Sublime.
And a delightful antidote to the sweaty season we are currently enduring.
What a splendid photograph! I like that “crown”! I’ll even concede the snow is beautiful – especially since it’s in a picture.
Hi! What a wonderful photo! Love the snow on and around him! Makes the deer stand out so great! Keep up your great shooting! Have a special day! love mom
Love it! I wonder if the does were impressed with his “crowning glory”. Ha,ha!
Beautiful picture Mia. He is dressed up for the occasion.
