An American Coot running on water – Nikon D810, f7.1, 1/1250, ISO 400, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
About two weeks ago I photographed this American Coot running on water at Farmington Bay WMA. Some times I see and photograph running coots when they are squabbling and chasing each other due to territorial disputes but in this case it was a duck hunter that walked past and caused all of the coots in the area to run across the water. It didn’t take the coots long to settle back in and start feeding again but for a few seconds it seemed like there was chaos on the water as more than twenty coots went past me.
I liked this image because of the sharpness of the American Coot, the view of its red eye, huge, green feet, and the blur of the splashing water.
Life is good.

Crazy as a coot? Not if it has the sense to run from a duck hunter.
Stunning bird, and image.
As usual I am with Patty.
They have the craziest looking feet, but soooo efficient for swimming and running on water! If that bird could WALK on water, I might get religion!
Excellent action shot, coots (of any type) are great to photograph, they are such amazing characters.
