Female Dusky Grouse walking across Sky Line Drive
I have been thinking a lot about Sky Line Drive this week which includes Bountiful and Farmington Canyons and the Uinta Wasatch Cache National Forest so I thought I’d share a few bird and critter images taken up there today.
The first is a female Dusky Grouse that crossed the gravel road on the way up. Dusky Grouse are upland game birds and I have seen them a few times going up the canyons and one time a male all the way at the top. You can’t get much more upland than that in Davis County!
Green-tailed Towhee singing in the Uinta Wasatch Cache National Forest
Green-tailed Towhees can be found singing on their territories in July and with their rufous crowns raised it is easy to identify them visually. I usually hear them before I see them.
Moose calf running through an alpine meadow
I like to try to find Moose on the eastern side of the mountains and I always feel very lucky when I can photograph a Moose calf like this one running across an alpine meadow.
I might need to go wandering up the canyons and Sky Line Drive soon just to see what birds and creatures I can find.
Life is good.

Hello Mia, awesome birds and cool sighting of the moose. Happy weekend!
Nice images. I’ve taken that drive twice before but didn’t see near as much as you.
So much beauty. So much wonder.
Happy wandering.
Three good reasons to go wandering. Good luck.
Nice series! Used to have friends in Sandy…always loved that area…the mountains are so beautiful. I’m always impressed by the sturdy look of the grouse’s legs. Love the shots of the towee and that healthy, shiny moose calf.
