First of year photo of a juvenile Loggerhead Shrike – Nikon D810, f8, 1/800, ISO 400, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
On the 20th of May I saw my first of the year Loggerhead Shrike fledglings but it wasn’t until the 24th that I was able to photograph this young shrike. I’ve looked through my archives and the earliest I have photographed fledgling Loggerhead Shrikes on Antelope Island State Park previously was June 10 so they might be fledging about two to three weeks earlier than most years.
I will be seeing more of these little wannabe raptors soon.
Life is good.

Sweet!
Mia, life must be good when you get to see these little cuties! It almost looks cuddly!
Echoing Susan and Patty (as I so often do). Love the monochromatic magic.
It does have that young look about it-lovely photo.
Like Susan, I , too, love the monochromatic effect…..silver on silver.
Don’t you just love their subtle plumage? Gorgeous. Perfect capture on that perch with a really lovely background.
Mia, this is one of the most beautiful bird portraits I’ve seen. Love the monochromatic look.
Looks like this Loggerhead already has an attitude! Great shot Mia!
