Rough-legged Hawk on a gray day – Nikon D300, f5.6, 1/2500, ISO 800, +1.0 EV, Nikkor 200-400mm VR with 1.4x TC at 357mm, natural light, not baited
It was a fairly gray day here and that kept me from going out with my camera but some gray days I just have to get out. The day in 2011 when I photographed this Rough-legged Hawk was gray but it didn’t really bother me to capture this handsome bird in low light. It had taken off from some bushes on Antelope Island near the marina that are no longer there. I miss seeing the Rough-legged Hawks perched on those bushes. Well, they were invasives but I sure wish that native shrubs or trees had been planted there to take their place. We need every tree and shrub we can plant.
Anyway, on this gray day I have been messing around trying to get a new theme set up on my site so please excuse the dust and the mess. I’ll try to get all the kinks sorted out soon.
Life is good.

I really like being able to see the individual talons and the discrete feathers on the far wing. This is not what we usually see when we watch a bird in motion. Thank you, Mia!
Beautiful shot!
So so beautiful!!!!!
That bird would brighten even the greyest of days…
It sure would EC!
A very unusual shot! Really, really nice! Good luck with your “furniture moving”…hope you get things set up to your satisfaction soon…
Thanks Patty.
I hope this looks okay on your iPad. The index page looks odd on my tablet because a few images are missing on the latest blog posts.
Fantastic!
Thank you Ian.
Amazing color and saturation considering the lighting!
Thanks Steven!
