Late last month I posted about Two Moose on the Loose in the Targhee National Forest and today I thought I’d share two more images of the moose. The cow was standing near Dairy Creek with blooming Indian Paintbrush in the background while watching over her calf.
Moose cow at Dairy Creek – Nikon D300, handheld, f7.1, 1/1250, ISO 500, -0.7 EV, Nikkor 70-300mm VR at 300mm, natural light
The creek and the moose were too close to the road for me to use my long lens so I had to switch to my D300 with a 70-300mm VR lens to take this image and still keep a safe distance from the protective cow moose and her calf.
Moose cow at Dairy Creek – Nikon D7100, f6.31, 1/2000, ISO 500, +0.7 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
This image was taken with my longer lens as the calf started to cross the dirt road to follow the cow to the creek. We looked for the moose several more times in the Dairy Creek area before heading back to Utah but never saw them again. Maybe next trip.
Life is good.

The cow is a dark beauty and looking at it’s shoulder and fore leg reminds me of a horse, but no one could ever survive those withers! Cute little calf even with the winter hair.
Gorgeous. Thank you.
Mom and Baby! Beautiful creatures! Thanks for a great photos 🙂
The colors in the moose’s coat and in the wildflowers behind are gorgeous.
Thanks, Mia.
Nice capture of the cute calf but the cow shot is wonderful; such a beautiful background.
