Reddish Egret hunting along the Gulf Coast of Florida – Nikon D200, handheld, f7.1, 1/640, ISO 200, Nikkor 80-400mm VR at 120mm, natural light
Recently I posted images of a Tricolored Heron and a Black-bellied Plover where I wrote that I enjoyed images that include habitat, the same could be said about this photo of a Reddish Egret hunting on the shoreline of the Gulf Coast. The out of focus trees in the background give just a hint of the habitat I might find a Reddish Egret in without the trees being a distraction. The focus is entirely on the large wading bird but I like the visual interest of the trees and the distant horizon of the Gulf of Mexico.
This Reddish Egret came in so close to me that I had to continually back up my zoom, I guess it had no concerns about the one-eyed crazy woman laying in the shallow waves at the shore.

Wonderful image!
I love this photo…can almost feel the warmth of the water and the soft rocking motion of the little waves,,, beautiful bird, so intently focused and oh so carefully treading.
SUPERB. There is nothing more to say.
Stunning Mia! I love how the Egret pops right off the water background. I guess I wish the horizon didn’t dissect the head, but if it were my image I would be ecstatic anyway.
A beautiful action image, Mia and I especially love those gentle waves. I too see the dinosaur connection in the Egrets, which can stir the imagination.
This is a really lovely photograph and the quality of the light is very soft. I love the way you caught the Reddish Egret in mid-step.
In shots like this I can clearly see the relationship of birds to dinosaurs. This egret somehow looks prehistoric to me – and I love the background.
Thank you.
Excellent photo! The Reddish Egret’s subtle changes in coloration are beautiful.
Lovely image Mia, the raised foot makes it extra special
Beautiful image, Mia! I love the background!
Such a beautiful photo! I like the composition a lot.
Love it!
I like the trees too. It does look quite relaxed.
