Juvenile White-crowned Sparrow – Nikon D300, f5.6, 1/1000, ISO 640, +0.7 EV, Nikkor 200-400mm VR with 1.4x TC at 400mm, natural light, not baited
Although White-crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys) are year round residents in Utah I see far more of them in the fall, winter and early spring and because it is cold they also are “stickier” and allow closer approaches.
This juvenile White-crowned was perched along a road on Antelope Island State Park on a shrub that was leafless with dried stems of Black Mustard in the background last winter. I like the seed stuck on its bill and how the sparrows head is cocked sideways.

I have a fondness for the juvies, with their buffy brown and gray tones.
The juvies are beautiful, thanks Julie.
Super capture Mia ( I posted some too today).
Dan, your sparrows were gorgeous too!
This little number threw me off when I first met him. The juvenile has brown crown and for a beginning birder, I was confused:)
Sparrows confuse me too at times Chris! Thanks for commenting.
Very nice background and framing!
Thanks Maria, I’m glad the sparrow posed long enough to get a series of images of it.
Wonderful capture Mia:)
Thank you Susan.
Wonderful richness to the bird’s coloring Mia.
Thanks Stu!
Beautiful! Sparrows in the grass are some of my favorite types of photos!
Thanks Laurence, they do look great in grass.
Beautiful young bird Mia.
Thanks Bob, they are beautiful sparrows.
Very beautiful! I’ve been seeing a lot of White-crowned Sparrows in the Chicago area of late.
Thank you Julie, I hope that you get some wonderful images of the White-crowned Sparrows in your area.
Absolutely gorgeous, Mia! I love this composition and everything about it!!
Thank you Beverly.
