Long-tailed Weasels

Mustela frenata

Long-tailed Weasels have brownish backs, long brown tails with black tips and white to yellowish undersides during the summer, during the winter they are snowy white and retain the black tipped tails. Long-tailed Weasels in the southern parts of their range may stay brown.

When a bird photography trip up to Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge starts with me spotting not just one but two Snowy Plovers out on the flats I just know the day is off to a great start and that is what happened yesterday morning.

So it wasn't a great morning but it wasn't all that bad either because I was able to focus on a Short-eared Owl, Brewer's Blackbirds and one curious Long-tailed Weasel.

I was able to photograph a Long-tailed Weasel in its white winter coat two years ago at Farmington Bay WMA and although I liked the images they really weren't what I truly desire.
