Rufous Hummingbirds

Selasphorus rufus

Rufous Hummingbirds are medium sized hummingbirds. The males are a bright rufous overall with white breasts, a red-orange gorget and green shoulders, their rufous tails are rounded with black edges. Females have green underparts with rufous sides and under tails, white breasts and bellies, gray and white throats with a red spot, and their tails are rufous, green and black with white tipped outer tail feathers. Juveniles resemble females but have white throats.

Rocky Mountain Bee Plants are blooming all over the Salt Lake Valley right now and those beautiful, spider-like flowers are attracting hummingbirds, moths, butterflies, bees and a host of insects.
