Leaping female Mountain Bluebird – Nikon D7100, f6.3, 1/2000, ISO 500, +0.7 EV, Nikkor 200-400mm VR with 1.4x TC at 357mm, natural light
Some times when I am photographing I capture my subjects in funny poses and I think I did exactly that with this Mountain Bluebird female. If I didn’t know what happened in the frames I shot after this one I might wonder what the bluebird is doing. Is she landing? Using the fence post as a trampoline?
She is just lifting off from the fence post and in this frame her wings had not opened yet.
I photographed her last week in the Centennial Valley of Montana. Some of the bluebirds there are re-nesting now because they lost their first broods to a late cold snap & snow.
Life is good.

Great capture, Mia!
So cute-fun to capture these moments. I thought she was listening to an aerobics CD and “bustin’ the moves”..
She does look determined, and focussed. I really, really hope the second nesting is successful. Wonderful image – and I am indeed smiling broadly. Thank you.
Hop! Nice picture 🙂
How interesting. I just assumed the wings were the first step in lifting off. I learn so much from your blog!
She looks vey determined. Good catch.
Love it Mia! Put a smile on my face!
