Chukar in the snowChukar in the snow – Nikon D300, f8, 1/1600, ISO 500, 0.3 EV, Nikkor 200-400mm VR at 228mm, natural light

As the nights grow longer and the days grow shorter I start to think of fall and winter and the opportunities I will have with photographing my subjects in snow. It can be a challenge to get exposures right when there are fields of bright white snow but it really isn’t much different than photographing a Black Skimmer landing on the sugar sand of Fort De Soto.

I  photographed this Chukar in a field of white undisturbed snow last January, as I recall it was bitter cold that morning but the bright sun seemed to warm the Chukar as much as it warmed my hands.

The trees are starting to change in the high country now and soon there will be a riot of yellows, oranges and reds of autumn leaves creeping down to the valley and after that will come the snow.
